This compact tangle of streets in London's West End has been the city's creative soul for longer than anyone can quite remember. Just upstairs from the restaurant, you'll find The Snail Club, one of Soho's freshest private members' clubs. Not stuffy or exclusive in the old-fashioned sense, this elegant space offers a modern take on the London club tradition — relaxed conversation, cultural events, and genuine community perfectly at home in Soho's eclectic landscape.

The neighbourhood wears its history lightly, never precious about preservation. Walk along to The Dog and Duck at 18 Bateman Street, a Grade II-listed pub built in 1897 that's welcomed everyone from writers to royalty. Sit in the upstairs room named for George Orwell and feel the centuries around you — it's the perfect Soho way to soak up atmosphere between wanderings.

Where Revolution Was Born

Some of Soho's most important stories live in memory and legend. The Shim Sham Club at 37 Wardour Street was a 1930s jazz haven that brought together Black musicians, Jewish immigrants, and LGBTQ+ Londoners at a time when such mixing was revolutionary. The best way to experience Soho is without a rigid plan. Start at Soho Square, where a surprisingly tranquil garden offers respite from urban buzz, then let the streets lead you where they will. Perhaps you'll drift toward Old Compton Street, the beating heart of LGBTQ+ London, where Comptons of Soho at numbers 51-53 has been a gathering place for community and celebration since 1986. Since even the greatest of winter enthusiasts can only stand chapped lips and diminished sunlight for so long, we consider the cold months one of the best times to travel—sunny beaches and tropical islands offer a much-needed seasonal escape, and hotel and flight prices tend to drop as the temperatures do.

From San Diego to French Polynesia, here are 19 warm winter vacations to take this season.

The Bahamas

Go pintxos bar-hopping

Tapas is more synonymous with Spanish culture—but this is the Basque Country, really, and pintxos are the order of the day here. A pintxo is a small snack served in tavernas or bars and is most often (although not always) served on top of a slice of bread, speared with a cocktail stick to keep the toppings (anchovies, perhaps, or goat cheese and ham, or tortilla) in place. Pintxos are small enough to whet your appetite over a glass of wine or beer pre-supper—but in San Sebastián, we recommend foregoing a sit-down dinner altogether, instead embarking on a pintxos hopping tour. One popular route starts at Borda Berri (order the confusingly named ‘kebab’, which is actually a melty pork rib) before wandering down the street for pitstops at Bar Sport (order the txangurro, or crab) and Txepetxa, where all the pintxos come with an anchovy and your choice of additional toppings. Whichever route you take, make sure to finish the crawl at La Viña, the birthplace of the burnt Basque cheesecake.

Sunbathe at La Concha

San Sebastián has a prime position in the Basque Country, set right on the sea. The city skyline curves around the main, crescent-shaped beach La Concha, which itself melts into gin-clear water overlooking Santa Clara island, which rises from the ocean a few hundred metres from the shore. A promenade edges the beach, for those who aren't in the mood for sandy trainers – follow the railings to the right, as you look at the water, and you'll reach the 1920s-built Nautical Club and the City Hall. Or head onto the beach and into the sea – the water is usually shallow, but the waves can come thick and fast.

Hike up Monte Urgull

At one end of La Concha sits Monte Urgull, a gorgeous green space which winds up gradually to the summit, where the Sagrado Corazón statue and the ruins of Castillo de la Mota still sit. There are four paths that will lead you to the top; each has exceptional viewpoints to gaze at the city and sea below as you climb. The best route starts next to San Telmo Museum.

Stroll through Parque de Cristina Enea

Take an approximately two-mile stroll around Parque de Cristina Enea, the one-time home of its namesake the Duchess of Mandas, and her Ducal husband Fermín. This is the biggest park in San Sebastián, set over 23 acres and dating back to the late 1800s. Ducks, swans and peacocks swim in the ponds, and a handful of buildings dating from the period are scattered across the grounds, ripe for exploring.

Get a culture fix at the San Telmo Museum

Those hankering after some Basque history and culture shouldn't sleep on the San Telmo Museum, which is set at the foot of Monte Urgull in the city's Old Town. A space known as the San Telmo Museoa has existed here since 1902, but the collection moved to its present-day setting in a 16th-century convent in the 1930s, with a brand new building added alongside a few years ago. These days, you can expect a collection focussing on photography, religion, and local art as well as temporary exhibitions spotlighting topics such as vintage tourism posters.

Try your hand at surfing

We've already waxed lyrical about San Sebastián's plum position on the Atlantic Ocean—and this setting makes it an ideal spot for surfing, too. The best time to surf in the area is actually between September and December, when there are less visitors and the swell of the waves is more consistent. If you're a beginner, book a couple of lessons with a local surf school such as Pukas Surf Eskola ($45 for 1.5 hours). If you're more confident, the best spots are at Zarautz, about 20 minutes away from the main city, and Zurriola, in the city itself.

Visit the old Tabakalera

Artsy types should make tracks for Tabakalera, the city's former tobacco factory turned international cultural centre. Here, you'll find exhibition halls, multi-purpose plazas and halls, a cinema theatre, a library, art spaces and a restaurant—plus a fifth-floor terrace with great views.

Parque de Alderdi Eder

This sweet plaza, fronting the honey-hued former casino (now, ironically, serving as the City Hall) is set just back from the beach and is a lovely spot for a pre-supper wander. There's a vintage carousel (good for entertaining little ones, as is a gander at the street performers who often set up here during the late afternoon). There are shady benches with exceptional views, for those less keen on the beach, and loads of gorgeous flora and fauna to admire, too.

Chill out at Playa de la Zurriola

We mentioned Playa de la Zurriola above for its surf scene – but even those who don't want to take to the waves will want to while away a few hours here. You could watch the surfers chase waves from the comfort of the sand, spectate locals playing volleyball or beach tennis, stroll the 2,600 feet of sand along the waterfront, or simply splay out on the sand and enjoy the mild Basque sunshine.

The arrival of Rhapsody reinforces the upward trend of cruises to the destinations of Panama [1] and Colombia [2] , where the arrival of vacationers increased 557.1% and 346% respectively in the most recent season.

That will come courtesy of Alaska Airlines, which is building out its network with flights between Portland International Airport (PDX) and Nashville International Airport (BNA). Service starts March 14, 2024, and will make Alaska the only airline to fly the route nonstop.

“Our new flight will link a pair of exciting regions that both have wide-ranging, festive entertainment and sports scenes as well as growing business centers,” Kirsten Amrine, Alaska’s vice president of revenue management and network planning, said in a statement.

Amrine also noted that part of the reason why Alaska added a PDX-BNA route was because it noticed its customers in the region wanted an easier way to travel to Nashville. Currently, all the carriers that serve Portland, including Alaska, have layovers in their flights to Nashville.

The new route to Nashville is also Alaska’s 53rd nonstop route from Portland, where the Seattle-based carrier has maintained its status as the largest carrier in the Oregon city for 20 years. With the new route, Alaska now flies to more destinations outside the Pacific Northwest from Portland than it did before the coronavirus pandemic. In addition to Nashville, Alaska plans to start flying nonstop from Portland to Miami on Nov. 17.

• PDX-BNA: departs 9 a.m. PDT; arrives 3:20 p.m. EDT

While the cruising arm of Disney has long focused mostly on voyages to the Caribbean and the Bahamas, with year-round sailings to those destinations out of Florida, it also now offers a relatively wide range of seasonal sailings to Alaska, the Mexican Riviera, Bermuda, Europe and Canada.

The family-friendly cruise brand, notably, is expanding its footprint worldwide as it adds four new vessels in quick succession.

Already, the first of those ships, the 2,508-passenger Disney Wish, has arrived, boosting the size of the Disney fleet from four ships to five and allowing for more departures to the Caribbean, Mexico and Europe.

Two more sister vessels to Disney Wish are due to begin sailing in 2024 and 2025, respectively, allowing for further expansion in Disney cruise itineraries. In addition, the line has yet another new vessel coming in 2025 that isn’t related to the other three. Called Disney Adventure, it’s a one-off vessel originally designed for an Asian line, and it’ll sail in Asia (perhaps catering mostly to Asian travelers; Disney has been mum so far on the target audience for it).

All these new ships arriving in quick succession will likely mean not just more departures to destinations where Disney Cruise Line is established but also sailings in new regions. For example, Disney has never before offered Asia sailings.

Here are our picks for the five best Disney cruise destinations you can visit with your family.

Caribbean and Bahamas

Disney Cruise Line’s top destination has always been the Caribbean and the Bahamas. Since its founding more than two decades ago, the brand has based the bulk of its fleet in Florida to offer sailings to the islands. Port Canaveral, which is just an hour away from Disney’s Orlando-area theme parks, has always been its biggest hub.

The line is particularly known for three- and four-night cruises out of Port Canaveral to Castaway Cay and Nassau in the Bahamas. These short getaways let families get a taste of Disney cruising that some Disney fans pair with a stay at Disney World.

The cruise line also regularly offers seven-night sailings out of Port Canaveral that visit Caribbean islands like St. Thomas and Tortola.

In recent years, Disney has also built up its Caribbean and Bahamas cruise offerings from other ports in Florida — initially Miami and, more recently, Fort Lauderdale. The ships the line has based in these ports typically offer four- and five-night sailings to Castaway Cay and one other port, such as Cozumel or Grand Cayman.

In addition, Disney is offering a growing number of Caribbean sailings out of Galveston, Texas, and New Orleans.

For 2024, the line will have four of its five ships — Disney Wish, Disney Dream, Disney Magic and Disney Fantasy — sailing to the Bahamas and Caribbean out of one of the above ports, with their home bases often shifting between them.

Disney Wish, which is Disney’s newest ship, will be based in Port Canaveral year-round to operate the line’s classic three- and four-night sailings to the Bahamas. These voyages are designed to be paired with a visit to nearby Disney World for a longer Disney vacation.

Disney Fantasy will also sail out of Port Canaveral to the Bahamas and Caribbean year-round, offering longer voyages.

Disney Dream will spend the start and the end of the year sailing short trips to the Bahamas and Caribbean out of Fort Lauderdale, with a stint in the middle of the year (from May to October) sailing in Europe.

Disney Magic will take Disney Dream’s place sailing short trips to the Bahamas and Caribbean out of Fort Lauderdale from May to October. During the early and late months of the year, it’ll sail out of Galveston.

Come 2025, Disney will have four ships — Disney Fantasy, Disney Wish, Disney Dream and Disney Magic — sailing three- to five-night getaways from Florida to the line’s Bahamian destinations, including its new private beach destination Disney Lookout Cay at Lighthouse Point and its long-open private island Disney Castaway Cay. Disney Fantasy and Disney Wish will operate the trips from Port Canaveral, while Disney Dream and Disney Magic will sail from Fort Lauderdale.

Before taking up residence in Florida in April 2025, Disney Magic will also offer three months’ worth of sailings out of Galveston, Texas, to Progreso and Cozumel in Mexico and Grand Cayman.

All of the 2025 sailings are already open for bookings.

Mexico

Disney has cut back on voyages out of San Diego for 2024, after increasing its San Diego departures sharply in 2023. But it still offers several trips to Mexico out of the city on Disney Wonder.

For 2024, the 1,754-passenger vessel will offer a mix of three- to seven-night sailings to Mexico during March and April. Shorter three- and four-night sailings typically feature calls at Ensenada, Mexico, and California’s Catalina Island. Seven-night sailings include calls at Cabo San Lucas, Mazatlan and Puerto Vallarta in Mexico.

The big factor driving Disney’s cutbacks on sailings out of San Diego in 2024 is its new focus on voyages out of Australian ports. Disney Wonder will spend much of January and February sailing out of Australian ports and then return to the region in October for another season of Australia trips.

Europe

Disney offers a wide variety of itineraries in Europe every summer, from Mediterranean voyages out of Barcelona and Civitavecchia, Italy (the port for Rome), to Northern Europe sailings out of Southampton, England.

Ranging from seven to 11 nights, Disney’s Europe voyages each year typically take place on a single ship that sails from multiple home ports throughout the season. For 2024, that ship will be the 2,500-passenger Disney Dream. The line has yet to announce which of its ships will go to Europe in 2025.

Typical for the shorter itineraries the line offers in Europe are seven-night sailings out of Civitavecchia to the Greek Islands. These sailings stop in Mykonos, Santorini and Crete in Greece, as well as Naples, Italy.

A longer, 11-night itinerary starting in Civitavecchia and ending in Barcelona includes calls at Piraeus (the port for Athens), Santorini and Mykonos in Greece; Messina (on the island of Sicily), Naples and Livorno in Italy; and Toulon, France.

Among Northern Europe itineraries, Disney offers focused, weeklong sailings to Norway with calls at the Norwegian ports of Alesund, Nordfjordeid, Eidfjord and Stavanger.

Alaska

Disney does not have a large presence in Alaska. The line sends just one ship to Alaska each year. Family-friendly cruise rivals Royal Caribbean and Carnival Cruise Line, by contrast, each send three ships to Alaska each year, and Norwegian Cruise Line sends five vessels to the destination.

Still, Disney fans won’t feel like they’re missing out. The one vessel Disney sends to Alaska each year, the 1,754-passenger Disney Wonder, stays for nearly the entire summer season, from late June to mid-September and offers a distinctly Disney take on The Last Frontier.

Always beginning and ending in Vancouver, British Columbia, and lasting seven nights, Disney’s Alaska sailings typically include stops at three of these four Alaska ports: Juneau, Skagway, Ketchikan and Icy Strait Point (which three vary by departure date). Itineraries also include a visit to Stikine Icecap, which is south of Juneau.

These are fairly typical ports for an Alaska cruise. But the (extra-charge) activities that Disney has organized for the ports aren’t always the same as what other lines offer.

As one might expect for Disney, the line has crafted some of its shore excursions in Alaska ports with special Disney touches, such as Disney character appearances at the Liarsville Gold Rush Trail Camp & Salmon Bake tour in Ketchikan. (Having done this one myself, I will say, for the record, that it’s a little hokey; but it does get you a Disney character fix if that’s your aim.)

Another shore excursion with a Disney touch is the outdoor Family Scavenger Hunt at Icy Strait Point, where participants join a local guide on a hunt for items such as clam shells and native plants, as well as a “special surprise” with a Disney theme.

Unlike many lines, Disney does not offer one-way sailings to Alaska from Vancouver or Seattle that can be paired with add-on land tours to create an extended sea-and-land Alaska vacation — something known as a “cruisetour.” If that’s what you’re looking for, and you want to stick with a family-friendly line, you might want to consider the one-way cruisetour offerings from Royal Caribbean and Norwegian Cruise Line.

Bermuda

Disney typically offers at least one and sometimes several cruises to Bermuda each fall, ranging from quick, five-night trips to longer, eight-night sailings.

For the year just ending (2023), the line offered four such sailings, and it’s offered even more than that in certain years. Alas, for the coming year (2024), Disney currently does not have a single Bermuda sailing scheduled — a bit of an anomaly.

That said, we would expect Disney to bring back its Bermuda sailings for 2025 or 2026. It’s been such a mainstay of the brand.

Bottom line

Family-friend Disney Cruise Line is a relatively small cruise brand, with just five ships (one of its biggest rivals in the family cruise market, Royal Caribbean, has 26 vessels). But that doesn’t mean its itinerary choices are limited. The line offers regular sailings to the Caribbean and Bahamas, Mexican Riviera, Alaska, Bermuda and Europe.

Among the updates were “Immersive Views” for routes, better lane and high occupancy vehicle data for route planning, EV charging data visibility improvements and, most importantly for the travel sector, captivating visual results for non-specific queries like “Things to do near me.”

The October product release aligns with Google’s continued efforts to diversify interactive surfaces beyond Google Search as younger users turn to platforms like Instagram and TikTok for content and respond better to visual and multimedia content.

The new update will be available in the coming weeks in major world markets including the United States, Canada, France and Germany.

Google Maps as an activity-finding tool

Imagine you’re taking a trip to New York City with your family and you have two young kids. One of the new features in this update is a “discover through photos” feature that shows artificial intelligence-filtered images of families participating in family-friendly activities in New York. You can explore those photos either in a carousel format or on the map itself. Clicking on a specific photo will navigate you to the tour, activity or attraction that the photo is uploaded to. This search would be in lieu of going to Google.com to search “Things to do in New York with kids.”

Google uses advanced image recognition and AI, which is already largely used in the Google Photos, Google Images and Google Search products to produce relevant, hyper-personalized search results from Google Business Profile listings.

Google Maps as a marketing channel for tours and activities

If the market adapts and users turn to Google Maps for activity inspiration, the new feature could lead to increased direct bookings for tour operators and attractions. The photos surfaced in the new feature appear to come from Google Business Profiles, a first-party surface for businesses using it. Furthermore, the Google Things to Do platform, which allows operators to list tour and attraction inventory directly on the Google Business Profile allows for seamless bookings.

The inclusion of exploratory searches in maps will likely result in faster progression from the top to the bottom of the funnel: turning a “discovery”-focused search into a purchasing opportunity.

As with all Google surfaces, smart travel businesses will find ways to “game” the system and influence their positioning in these search results. Most Google products don’t publish ranking algorithm specifics, so testing and iteration will be required to find the best way to position specific tours, activities and attractions higher in the list to ensure inclusion on the “discover through photos” feature.

Our advice for tour operators and activities: This is a photo-centric search, and the photos displayed appear to come directly from your Google Business Profile. Presumably, the more diverse photos you have of your experience and people enjoying your experience, the greater the number of opportunities to appear in passion-based and intent-based “things to do” searches in Google Maps.

Make sure there are photos of families enjoying your activity on your Google Business Profile. You can either upload those directly through your Google Business Profile or encourage customers to post reviews with photos, which get added to your library.

Google continues to push further into travel and tourism across its products - often with the perceived intention of shortening the time-distance between the “dreaming” and “booking” phases of Google’s “travel micro-moments.” This space continues to develop and bears watching for its continued evolution.

The Zootopia land at Shanghai Disney Resort will be based on the hit 2016 Walt Disney Animation Studios film of the same name. It will be Shanghai Disneyland’s eighth themed land and the first “Zootopia”-themed land at any Disney park. The area will bring “Zootopia” into the real world with immersive design, beloved characters, innovative attractions and entertainment and more.

“The beloved Disney Animation film ‘Zootopia’ has fostered a strong connection with its audience since its debut. We are thrilled to have the opportunity to bring that very connection to life right here in Shanghai with this one-of-a-kind themed land,” Joe Schott, president and general manager of Shanghai Disney Resort, said in a press release.

“Over years of development, diverse minds and talent around the globe from more than 140 disciplines worked tirelessly to create a unique ‘mammalian’ experience for our guests, immersing them in this metropolis’ vibrant animal world. We are extremely proud of what they’ve created and confident that everyone will be amazed from their very first step into ‘Zootopia,'” he added.

You won’t have much longer to wait to “Try Everything” with Judy Hopps, Nick Wilde and their “Zootopia” friends. The land officially opens Dec. 20.

The “Zootopia” flagship attraction will be called Zootopia: Hot Pursuit, set after the events of the film. Guests will take on the role of rookie officers with the Zootopia Police Department, charged with assisting officers Judy Hopps and Nick Wilde on their mission to rescue superstar Gazelle from her kidnapper, Assistant Mayor Bellwether. The trackless dark ride will take guests on an existing chase through the various environments of Zootopia, from the icy streets of Tundra Town to the vast tree canopies of the Rainforest District.

Before boarding the ride, guests will encounter some of Disney’s most sophisticated animatronics to date in the form of Officer Clawhauser and Chief Bogo. Guests might feel as if the characters have jumped off the big screen and into the park thanks to the pairing of the latest in robotic technology with Disney’s unparalleled eye for detail.

In addition to this state-of-the-art attraction, guests will be immersed in the metropolis of Zootopia, with realistic cityscapes that feel straight out of the film where guests can shop, dine and meet characters from the film.

Guests can pick up souvenirs, some of which are designed specifically for the land, at Fashions by Fru Fru or dine at Jumbeaux’s Cafe, an ice cream shop featured in the film. Jumbeaux’s will serve chocolate marshmallow “Jumbo-pops,” fox paw-shaped popsicles and more.

Throughout the day, characters will appear in the windows of the Zootopia Park Apartments to interact with guests and each other. Also, if you look closely, you’ll notice dozens of cheekily themed details like traffic signage featuring animals, billboards for films like “Meowna” and mammalian street names like “Mane Street” and “Nocturnal Alley.”

Zootopia officially opens Dec. 20, but the land will be open on select days in the weeks leading up to the opening for Disney cast members and invited guests for previews.

1. Greenland

There are approximately 90,000 annual visitors to Greenland– a far cry from the 20 million tourists who travel to Venice every year.

Considering the fact that Greenland is Europe’s largest island, your chances of being stuck in selfie-stick-brandishing crowds there are slim to none. Yet Greenland is a must-visit for lovers of nature and of the Arctic. 

It’s worth a visit in winter to experience the Polar darkness, and for the high likelihood to see Northern Lights in Kangerlussaq (where they appear approximately 300 nights each year).

In summer you can have fun round-the-clock under the midnight sun, enjoying adventure activities including kayaking in iceberg-filled lagoons and exploring the Ilulissat Icefjord, a UNESCO World Heritage Site (and one of the world’s few growing glaciers). 

Greenland is also unique in Europe because it’s the only place where you can learn about Inuit culture.

Qaanaaq, formerly known as Thule, is an Inuit town located at 77.4° north, making it one of the northernmost inhabited places in the world. It’s home to around 700 people, and tourists can learn about their culture and traditions.

2. Iceland’s Westfjords

Iceland is another place that’s often mentioned when talking about overtourism.

Its problems range from visitors flocking to a canyon once featured in a Justin Bieber video to locals enraged after seeing tourists using their gardens and fields as toilets. 

Bot most Iceland tourism is concentrated in the southern part of the country, in the vicinity of Reykjavik and the famous “Golden Circle.”

If you want to avoid throngs of tourists, head to the northwestern peninsula known as the Westfjords, which you can visit on small ship cruises. 

Reaching the region from the capital can take close to half a day, and the roads to get there aren’t great.

But you’ll be rewarded with roaring Iceland waterfalls like Dynjandi, thousands of Iceland birds such as puffins in Latrabjarg, and free-range Icelandic Horses as well as many incredible natural pools and hot springs.

3. Svalbard (Norway)

Do you have a knack for remote places? No other European hidden gem will make you feel on the edge of the map quite as much as Svalbard, the Norwegian archipelago that lies halfway between the North Pole and continental Norway. 

In summer, Svalbard is full of wildlife. Polar bears outnumber residents two to one, and you may also come across seals, walruses, whales, arctic foxes, and more. 

Nature is Svalbard’s main draw: There are endless glaciers, mountains, large expanses of tundra and sea cliffs, which are inhabited by a number of migratory birds.

Yet it’s also a place for history lovers, where it’s possible to visit a 17th century whaling station and recently abandoned coal mines, like the Soviet settlement of Pyramiden. 

Touring Svalbard on your own can be very dangerous. At these latitudes, nature is very wild and the danger of a polar bear attack is very real.

But there are expedition cruises to Svalbard every summer, with a focus on wildlife and finding polar bears.

4. Gotland (Sweden)

Located in the Swedish part of the Baltic Sea, Gotland was beloved by famous film director Ingmar Bergman. He spent the last 40 years of his life in Fårö, a tiny island located just north of Gotland.

It’s a popular destination for vacationing Swedes, but it’s all but unknown among other nationalities.

Gotland is a great place for people who wish to unplug completely, spending days in a secluded cabin in the forest and occasionally walking to the beach for a refreshing dip in the sea. 

Those who want to go sightseeing will also find plenty to do in Gotland. Visby, the largest town, is UNESCO-protected because it’s the best-preserved medieval town in Nordic Europe.

You can also visit the unique raukar (limestone sea stacks found on beaches all over the island), see wooden churches and medieval windmills, or even try to spot the endemic Gotland Pony.

WESTERN EUROPE HIDDEN GEMS

5. Shetland Islands (Scotland)

You’ll find the enchanting Shetland Archipelago on the remote edge of the United Kingdom’s map, 12 hours by ferry from the northern tip of Scotland. 

Not many people brave the stormy seas to reach this archipelago made up of 100 islands, only 16 of which are inhabited. 

Popular sights include St. Ninian’s Isle, where you can visit the largest tombolo (two-sided beach) in the UK; the Sumburgh Lighthouse, with its colonies of migrating birds (including puffins!); and the sea cliffs of Eshaness.

We also recommend visiting the ruins of croft houses, where local Shetlanders used to live before famine caused massive migrations in the 19th century.

The remote feeling of being “in the middle of nowhere” is one of the main draws that leads intrepid travelers to the Shetland Islands, and you’ll have few others to share this fascinating place with.

6. Jersey (Channel Islands)

The island of Jersey may be diminutive in size (just 5 by 9 miles), but it includes a large variety of sights, both natural and historic.

If you’ve planned a short stay in the Channel Islands, you may quickly find yourself planning a return visit. 

Its northern coast is famous for dramatic sea cliffs, which are surrounded by fields of fern and heather.

The southern part feels more genteel, with long sandy beaches and sheltered bays where you can appreciate the area’s extreme tides. For a unique experience, walk on the seabed at low tide, when the island doubles in size!

Jersey offers several castles to visit, as well as La Hougue Bie, a passage grave dating back to Neolithic times.

It’s also possible to visit bunkers and museums dating back to the time of German Occupation during World War II, including the Jersey War Tunnels, a museum located in a partially built underground hospital.

7. Brittany (France)

Far away from the chaos and crowds of Southern France in summer, Brittany is another one of the great places in Europe to explore. 

Located in northwest France, this region still retains a strong Celtic culture and way of life. It’s home to delicious seafood and around 1,740 miles of coastline, so you won’t ever have to worry about overcrowding.

The town of Saint Malo is one of Europe’s best-preserved fortified cities, or you can visit quaint villages like Dinan and Rochefort. 

This area’s windswept beaches are perfect for taking long coastal walks or bike rides, or you can head inland to visit castles or megalithic sites.

Another fun reason to visit Brittany is to go island-hopping in the Gulf of Morbihan, where you can find 40 islands, many of which are excellent birdwatching destinations.

8. Oberammergau (Germany)

Oberammergau is a sleepy town in Germany’s Bavarian Alps that really springs to life once every decade.

In 1633, the inhabitants made a vow: If they were spared from the plague that was ravaging Europe at the time, they would write and produce a play about the life and death of Jesus Christ, and repeat it once every 10 years. 

After 300+ years, the once-a-decade tradition of the Oberammergau Passion Play still continues today.

It typically takes place from May to October, with more than 100 performances of the 5-hour Passion Play taking place in an outdoor theatre. 

Some tour operators organize a tour of Switzerland, Austria, and Germany that includes the Passion Play in Oberammergau, plus unmissable European hidden gems such as Zermatt, a pedestrian-only town with views over the mighty Matterhorn Mountain.

9. Galicia (Spain)

Imagine green, rolling hills, mist and low clouds, fluffy sheep grazing in the fields, wild sea cliffs, and the sound of bagpipes in the air. Now guess, what place I’m talking about? 

You might be thinking of Ireland or Scotland, but the place I’m referring to is Galicia, a region in northwestern Spain overlooking the Atlantic Sea. 

The best-known place in Galicia is undoubtedly Santiago de Compostela, the end point of the famous Camino de Santiago hiking trail.

You can take a day trip from Santiago to Fisterra, where pilgrims of yesteryear finally saw the ocean after their endless pilgrimage across Europe.

Or head further off the beaten track to charming Muxia to visit its stunning cliffside chapel. 

Galicia is also known for its scenic wild beaches. One of the best-known beaches is As Catedrais, or The Cathedrals. When you visit, you’ll immediately see why!

10. Sardinia (Italy)

Sardinia is one of Italy’s two main islands, located about 186 miles from the mainland.

Its remote location means that most international travelers to Italy don’t bother visiting, and they truly don’t know what they’re missing!

Sardinia is home to an array of spectacular colorful beaches– some sandy, some rocky, some with unique quartz micro-pebbles. But all of them boast pristine waters that are perfect for scuba diving or snorkeling. 

Cagliari, the largest town on the island, is a pleasant place to discover, with a charming historic center.

The interior of the island is where you can still find remains of the mysterious Nuragic population, which predated Roman times.

11. Sicily (Italy)

Sicily is Italy’s largest and southernmost island. Unlike Sardinia, where culture survived largely untouched for centuries thanks to its isolation, Sicily was very much a cultural crossroads.

What you see there today is the result of centuries of changing hands, from the Phoenicians to the Greeks, from the Arabs to the Normans, the Swabians, and the Spanish. 

Lovers of art and history will be spoiled in Sicily.

Western Sicily, especially around Agrigento, is home to Greek ruins that rival the Parthenon in terms of beauty.

In eastern Sicily you can tour the stunning Baroque towns of Siracusa and Noto.

12. Azores (Portugal)

The Azores are technically part of Portugal, but they’re located over 620 miles away from the European mainland. 

This archipelago is made up of nine volcanic islands, each with something unique to offer.

For instance, Corvo (the smallest island) is actually an extinct volcano, while Terceira is known for its colorful capital and Pico is dominated by the mountain of the same name (which is the highest in Portugal.) 

A trip to the Azores is ideal for those who love nature and hiking.

But it’s not so great if you’re looking for steady sunshine, as the weather fluctuates considerably and there tends to be lots of rain.

13. The Black Sea

The European cruise industry is largely centered around the Mediterranean Sea. But whether it’s island-hopping in Greece or sailing the Dalmatian coast, summer in the Mediterranean offers a lot less elbow room than we’d like. 

Luckily, there’s another incredible European hidden gem that lends itself to cruising without all the crowds.

Straddling Eastern Europe and Western Asia, the Black Sea borders six countries– Romania, Bulgaria, Ukraine, Russia, Georgia, and Turkey. 

Cruising 0n a circumnavigation of the Black Sea offers travelers an opportunity to explore timeless cities like Istanbul and Odessa, as well as natural beauties like the Danube River Delta. 

There are also historic sites such as the Ottoman houses of Safranbolu and Sumela Monastery (near Trabzon), as well as the seaside resorts of Sochi in Russia and Batumi in Georgia.

This is a part of the world where few Western tourists ever care to venture, but it’s riddled with riches for intrepid travelers to discover!

14. Transylvania (Romania)

The historic region of Transylvania spans part of Central Romania, where it’s bordered by the Carpathian Mountains on the east and south and the Apuseni Mountains in the west. 

Of course, Transylvania is primarily known as the home of Vlad the Impaler, who is better known as Count Dracula in Bram Stoker’s classic horror novel.

You can still visit Bran Castle, the home of the mysterious Vlad. But Transylvania also has a lot more to offer. 

Visitors can also stroll the historical towns of Brasov and Sibiu to discover that Old World atmosphere of narrow cobblestone streets and steeples piercing the skies (minus the tourists).

Then head to the mountainous Maramures to visit the UNESCO-protected painted churches, and Voronet Monastery, the best-known painted church in the region of Bucovina.

15. Istria (Croatia)

Located in Croatia, but far away from bustling Dubrovnik (another well-known victim of mass tourism), you’ll find Istria.

This charming, heart-shaped peninsula sits at the crossroads between Italy and the Balkans, where you can breathe the Venetian influence in cuisine and architecture and explore wild Mediterranean nature. 

Istria was part of the Venetian republic for over 500 years before it was taken over by the Habsburg Empire. Wandering around towns like Labin and Rovinj today, you may think you’ve suddenly been transported to Venice. 

But the real marvels of Istria are found in the countryside, where there are opportunities to go hiking and cycling, explore vineyards and olive groves, and enjoy adventure activities like paragliding.

Upon arrival, you're greeted by a sight that might leave you breathless. As you descend a small hill, the vibrant turquoise waters of the sea present themselves in all their glory. 

Parking is available on the hill — just remember to secure your handbrake firmly. There's also an option to park under the shade of a tree on the right-hand side of the road, or a bit further ahead on the left, where a small cleared grass area provides additional parking space.

For those seeking a bit more exploration, there's a second section of Agrilia Beach which can be accessed by walking along the beach around the headland.

Fanari Beach

Fanari Beach, nestled on the scenic eastern coastline of Meganisi, is renowned for its turquoise waters and sun-bleached white pebbles. 

Reaching Fanari Beach is facilitated by a road from Vathy or Katomeri via Atherinos Bay. Given the summer heat, walking can prove challenging, so you might prefer to book a taxi, hire a scooter, drive a rental car, or even hire a small motorboat from Vathy and make an adventure of exploring the stunning coastline en route.

Once there, you'll discover that Fanari Beach offers the perfect blend of amenities and untouched nature. To the right side of the beach, there's a bar equipped with umbrellas, sun beds, showers, and toilets. On the left side, you'll find free space—some of it shaded—where you can settle down. The waters are crystal clear and teeming with fish, making it an ideal spot for snorkeling.

If you're in the mood to explore, a track road leading past the beach bars invites you on a journey to a small beach and a lighthouse on the cape, underscoring the beach's name, since "Fanari" means "lighthouse" in Greek. Those seeking a full lunch or dinner can venture around Atherinos Bay to Niagas Taverna, where delectable traditional Greek cuisine awaits.

The smaller beach bar set back from the road, is known for its excellent snacks, drinks, and friendly service. They also offer comfortable sunbeds, and if you purchase from them, you're welcome to use their paddleboards and sit-on-top kayaks for free. A visit to Fanari Beach is not just about the picturesque setting; it's an all-around enjoyable experience, thanks to the welcoming service and great food available on this stretch of Meganisi's stunning coastline.

Elia Beach

Elia Beach, nestled near the charming village of Katomeri, is a narrow stretch of small pebbles. Its sheltered bay, safe from the winds, and the shallow clear waters extend a welcoming invitation for a rejuvenating swim in the sea's soothing clasp.

For those seeking solitude, Elia Beach is an oasis. Despite the presence of a couple of holiday accommodations nearby, the beach maintains its tranquility, only interrupted occasionally by boats anchoring further out in the bay during the high season. As the sun sets in the west, the opposite mountains on mainland Greece illuminate in a mesmerising pink hue.

The beach, mostly exposed to the sun, offers minimal shade from a few trees along the shoreline. It's advisable to bring a sun umbrella for comfort. The rocks on the right of the bay are home to vibrant marine life, creating a perfect snorkeling spot for nature enthusiasts.

Reaching Elia Beach is an easy journey downhill past the Town Hall in Katomeri. However, caution is advised for drivers as the turning point at the hill's bottom can be quite tight. There are no amenities on the beach, so it's recommended to carry your own food and drinks or you could explore back up the hill to enjoy a traditional meal amidst the captivating ambiance of the Greek village of Katomeri.
