By Dominic Janes

Those who study abroad during their university degrees are more open to new ideas. It is a great way to foster innovation and, as a professional educator, I am delighted to see the post-covid rebound in numbers of students going abroad on such study programmes.

International education has become big business. There are currently about 700,000 foreign students in UK universities which is about ¼ of the total undergraduate cohort. Similar levels are found in a wide range of countries from Australia to the Netherlands and this has brought its own controversies. Politicians worry about the impact on overall immigration figures and on national cultures. Is it okay for non-English speaking countries to run increasing numbers of courses in that language in order to attract a wider range of applicants? Should we foster international multiculturalism on our campuses or bolster national cultures and educational priorities? These issues matter to large numbers of voters in Europe and elsewhere.

My academic specialism is history. The study of such liberal arts has, in the past, been most widespread among US students in study abroad. Family heritage helps to explain why over half of US students on such programmes opt to go to Europe. This has not changed since the last century, but what has altered is the proportion, now 60% or so, who opt to study for eight weeks or less. About half of that cohort comes over in the summer. As a college professor I am trained to focus on the study rather than the travel aspects of the experience. I, and my colleagues, spend our time thinking about the kinds of classroom activities the students will take part in and how we can make best educational use of the location in which we are teaching. But let’s switch this round. Study abroad, seen from a student’s perspective, is all about travel. And that is particularly true of summer programmes of a month or less.

In the post-war period US study abroad was often thought of as a process of cultural engagement with new places and people. Taking a year in France, Germany or Italy was often the aim, and was combined with language learning. It was sometimes joked that this involved having not just a ‘junior year abroad’ but a ‘junior affair abroad’! Romance is not dead, but the costs of degree courses have been rising rapidly as have those of transport and housing. This has driven students and families to look to shorter programmes and ones which will deliver precise career advantages. The proportion of study abroad experiences that include work-placements has become considerable. Such Internships rose about one-third proportionally in the decade pre-Covid. The contemporary practice of hybrid working at home and in the office has, I turn, made such placements more challenging to secure led to a rise in short-term consultancy projects as an alternative.

Some of the companies, such as AES, that specialise in running study programmes for US universities in London are closely connected with hotel and travel businesses. This is vital in ensuring the provision of high-quality student housing. But the relationship between travel and education has to be carefully thought-through so that both aspects are taken seriously in the pursuit of student satisfaction with their international experience. It is time for renewed dialogue between educational and travel professionals so to meet the challenges of the post-covid international student market.

By David Barrow, CITP FBCS

In this article, I'd like to shed light on three crucial aspects:

• The importance of IT and Service Management
• The significance of inter-sector communication
• The need to embrace sustainable technological advancements.

1. The Crucial Role of IT and Service Management with a focus on experience measurement via XLA’s

The travel and hospitality sector relies heavily on technology and delivering memorable experiences to customers – memorable for the right reasons!

In a world driven by digital innovation, efficient IT systems, robust service management, and measuring customer experience through Experience Level Agreements (XLA's) can make or break a business.

Here's why they are paramount:

Efficiency and Customer Experience: IT streamlines operations, from online reservations to check-in processes. It ensures seamless transactions and enhances the overall customer experience.

However, it's not just about smooth processes; it's about measuring and improving customer experience. This is where Experience Level Agreements (XLAs) come into play. XLAs focus on the outcomes and experiences that IT and service management deliver. By setting clear expectations and measuring the customer experience against those expectations, you can continuously improve and align your services with customer needs and preferences. For further information on how to effectively design human-centred thinking in IT, I recommend visiting https://hitglobal.services/ and learning more about Humanising IT™, a technique and methodology that uses the travel industry as its case study.

Data-Driven Decision Making: IT systems provide a wealth of data. Leveraging this data through analytics, including XLA data, allows you to make informed decisions, adapt to market trends and pivot during these VUCA1 times.

Straightforward customer and stakeholder-agreed measures provide valuable insights into where service improvements are needed to enhance the customer experience.

Cybersecurity: The travel industry is a prime target for cyberattacks due to the vast amount of sensitive customer data. Effective IT service management and security measures, including XLAs for security incident response and resolution times, are non-negotiable to protect your business and customers. Measuring security-related XLAs can help ensure that your cybersecurity efforts are above par, and that customer data remains secure.

2. The Power of Inter-Sector Communication

Communication is critical in any industry, and even more so in this modern connected age.

Crucially, this applies within your organisation and between different sectors of the travel and hospitality industry. Here's why fostering this communication is crucial:

Seamless Travel Experiences: Travellers don't see your industry as separate sectors; they see it as one journey. Effective communication between airlines, hotels, transportation providers, and local attractions can create a seamless and memorable travel experience. These communications are often delivered via technology services; how you design, operate and continually improve these services is critical to your success. How you integrate partners using methodologies such as SIAM (Service Integration and Management) can separate you in a positive light from your competitors. For more info on SIAM visit: What is SIAM

Issue and Incident Resolution: When issues arise, whether a flight delay or a hotel reservation glitch, quick and efficient communication can differentiate between a frustrated and satisfied traveller. Collaborative working across boundaries is essential. SIAM can help here by ensuring suppliers share measurements, and critically that they share cultural intent.

Market Insights: Sharing insights and market data with partners across the industry can help everyone adapt to changing customer preferences and market dynamics. Together, you can stay ahead of the competition and get ahead of the curve in this VUCA1 world.

3. Embracing Sustainable Technological Advancements

I think it’s fair to say that each of us understands the importance of sustainability. Technology and its delivery via IT Service Management plays a significant role in achieving sustainable goals in travel and hospitality. IT Service Management can be used to inform and address this with further information at: ISO/IEC 20000-1:2018 and the UN Sustainable Development Goals

Eco-Friendly Practices: Sustainable technology, such as energy-efficient systems and green building designs, can reduce the carbon footprint of hotels and transportation services, as can supplying electric vehicle charging delivered via renewable energy sources to your customers as a socially sustainable service option.

Digital Alternatives: Encourage the use of digital alternatives to traditional paper-based processes. E-tickets, digital room keys, and mobile check-ins enhance convenience and reduce waste; each forms core considerations when utilising IT Service management to design or improve digital service offerings.

Data-Driven Sustainability: IT and its associated service management practices and ISO standards can help you track and manage resource consumption, leading to more innovative, sustainable choices in areas like energy and water usage.

In conclusion, the travel and hospitality industry is at a crossroads where IT, service management, and sustainability intersect. Embracing these aspects is a strategic move and a necessity for long-term success. Efficient IT systems and service management improve operations, while communication between sectors creates a holistic travel experience.

Moreover, adopting sustainable technological advancements contributes to a more eco-friendly and socially responsible industry. Win-win-win…..

By Greg Hinc

As business strategies grapple with increasing uncertainty and volatility, the need for a comprehensive approach becomes imperative. Our world is so interconnected and undergoing constant change on both a global and local scale, that it is essential to observe vigilantly trends, risks, and evolving needs.

Leadership in these industries demands an acute awareness of political shifts, economic fluctuations, and cultural transformations, each presenting unique opportunities for those ready to recognise them and respond accordingly. Strategic responses should align seamlessly with customer perceptions, ensuring that market changes become catalysts for progress.

In the pursuit of staying tuned to current events, leaders must not only comprehend the forces instigating change but also predict their future trajectory. The ability to extrapolate data into forecasts and assess it critically becomes paramount, encompassing global events, generational shifts, and broader societal changes. Equally critical is the formulation of contingency plans to address unpredictable risks, ranging from global hacking attacks to natural disasters and economic upheavals.

Mitigating the unpredictable involves a strategic blend of buffers, reaffirming independence, and diversifying collaborations. By cultivating resilience through a thoughtful combination of these elements, businesses can fortify themselves against unforeseen challenges and crises.

The unpredictable, not so long ago associated with the pandemic, has now become a new norm among risks. To be prepared for it, leaders should let their imagination run wild, contemplating scenarios outlined in a comprehensive list of potential disruptors, no matter how unrealistic they may initially appear. This exercise would help to assess the extent of their preparedness even in the absence of clear contingency plans.

Combining buffers, independence, and diversification extends beyond risk mitigation; it offers a pathway to better economic manoeuvring. Closer collaborations with other companies, influencers, joint projects, and strategic partnerships would amplify the impact. Balancing local and global collaborations can unlock breakthroughs, emphasising once again the pivotal role of flexibility.

In the pursuit of serving growing, changing and diverse customer needs, a strong focus on individualisation is becoming paramount. Personalisation extends beyond the product offer to include marketing strategies, dynamically driven by AI algorithms. Recognising environmental awareness, well-being issues, and diverse cultural needs, leaders can make minor yet impactful adjustments, tailoring messages to specific target groups for more effective communication.

Understanding the audience exceeds mere demographics; it involves taking into account the emotional fabric of beliefs, needs, and unspoken concerns. Building trust involves addressing doubts about quality, cost, support, fit, and reliability. In a world where trust is declining, the significance of authentic experiences and customer testimonials cannot be overstated. Establishing a robust system of references, loyalty programs, and incentives for positive evaluations can leverage the power of word-of-mouth marketing.

Unforgettable customer experiences emerge as the peak of service excellence. Repetition, novelty, association, and emotional resonance serve as the building blocks of memorable encounters. Crafting positive surprises, exceeding customer expectations, and managing perceptions become critical components in this endeavour.

Data-driven decision-making takes centre stage for achieving excellence in services. Real data, sourced from customers and potential clients, serve as the most accurate basis for informed choices. A proactive approach to gathering information from various touchpoints, coupled with a keen eye on competitors, ensures more complete understanding of market dynamics.

Constant testing, checking, and running pilot programs embody the agile approach that is increasingly becoming the standard. Learning from mistakes, whether our own or those of others, becomes a cornerstone of improvement. Direct human-to-human interactions enhance the effectiveness of personalised approaches in an unpredictable environment. Providing clear guidelines and decision-making autonomy to customer-facing personnel ensures flexibility and adaptation at all levels.

Technology's transformative influence is reshaping the personalised customer approach, introducing more automation and individualisation, but it’s crucial to recognise that customers value choice. The cost reductions associated with AI bots should be weighed against potential losses in customer satisfaction, emphasising the importance of quality over time.

Technological developments are leading in radical changes, with virtual experiences gaining widespread acceptance. Beyond 3D viewing, advancements like 5D, 7D, and 9D cinema theatres, virtual reality (VR), and touch sensation technologies are expanding the boundaries of what constitutes a complete experience. The narrative surrounding virtual reality's acceptance and the extent to which it becomes good enough warrant vigilant monitoring.

If you want to not only survive but thrive as a leader in the travel and hospitality industry, one must be prepared to embody flexibility, adaptability, and innovation. The fusion of trust and personalisation, driven by data analytics and technology, empowers leaders to create compelling offers and secure their businesses in a dynamic and ever-changing environment. The success of tomorrow's leaders lies in their ability to coordinate these elements, ensuring a harmonious journey ahead.

I was having dinner at London’s Chiltern Firehouse this week with a senior executive in global business who had just returned from Dubai, when the topic of conversation centred around trust in travel and hospitality. Consumer distrust in the travel industry has been simmering underneath the surface for years. Now the world is reopening, people are watching to see what we do next. This is our opportunity to wipe the slate clean, by reminding travellers what they’ve been missing.

By Geoff Hudson-Searle

Trust is the most important factor for organisational sustainability because it is essential for overcoming uncertainty and alleviating risks and anxiety when in crisis; it is also essential in normal times when service is disrupted. In addition, trust plays an important mediating role in maintaining long-term relationships between customers and service organisations. As such, the perceived risk can be very high because customers make decisions about purchasing or using the service before experiencing the service, so service trust is essential in the service industry.

Business leaders know trust is a critical element of the Human Experience that shapes relationships with customers and employees. Metrics and surveys that gauge trust are easy to find.

What’s missing from all that conventional wisdom is the most important piece: What can you do about it? This is an especially pressing question for organisations in the travel and hospitality industry, including airlines, hotels, rental cars, and more.

If brands that sell computers or financial services or packaged goods rely so heavily on trust based on human experience, how much more important must it be to brands that sell… well, human experiences? For travel and hospitality brands, experience is the product, and trust is paramount. What’s just as critical, but less obvious, is the role trust plays in the experience these companies offer their employees.

Trust drives behaviours that lead to business results for travel and hospitality companies Deloitte has developed a new perspective on trust that unpacks the components that influence it and identifies the levers that can steer it. HX TrustID™ maps a direct path from understanding to action, based on extensive research and analysis using data from more than 7,500 United States customers and employees of real-world businesses. The trust mapping found that there are four signals Humanity, Transparency, Capability, and Reliability, when brought together in predictable ways can determine the level of trust an organisation enjoys.

Travel and hospitality brands have an almost “meta” or double relationship with human experience: Like all industries, they offer the experience of doing business with them or working for them. Unlike most other industries, they also deliver experience as the product itself. That’s why the trust that underpins the human experience, which is so important in the industry.

There’s little doubt that the industry is going to need to work hard to earn back the trust of travellers.

A customer-first approach is sure to get 2024 off to a good start, putting the focus on safe and sustainable travel. It’s going to be a tough road back, but not an impossible one. Communicating, listening and engaging with your customers holds the key to understanding what travellers want and placing them at the heart of the experience you offer.

Some important themes to move forward in building trust:

Focus on elevating human experiences for all humans in the ecosystem. For customers and employees, certainly, but also for franchise owners, supply chain partners, or real estate partners. Remember that travel companies tend to have strong Humanity signals compared to other industries—but that just means expectations are already high, there’s little tolerance for failing to get it right, and the bar is higher for efforts to stand out.

Understand unique customer and employee needs. What do people expect from a brand? Start by asking whom you’re dealing with. Each category in the sector should observe nuances among its diverse relationships: frequent business vs. leisure, loyalty member vs. first-timer, corporate owner vs. franchised, or employee vs. third-party. Digging deeper into the journey of each cohort is a step you must take before deciding the best course of action.

Embrace learnings from adjacent industries. While the dynamics and forces that influence airlines or hotels can be quite different, the customer point of view often lumps all these industries into one cohesive travel experience. That means it’s worth your while to understand brand experiences and expectations outside your direct industry and competition. When customers think about the brands they most trust, they often think across industries—so consider using the best in class of each signal as your benchmark.

Travel is a human need and for humans to experience. Travel and hospitality are at a unique point in history where there is an opportunity to reboot with a new mindset, and now the technology to execute real growth. The speed at which that happens will determine both loyalty and the future success of the industry.

So, let's embark on a quick journey to uncover the beautiful secrets this suburb holds for every curious traveller.

At the heart of Vincennes stands the magnificent Château de Vincennes, a symbol of medieval grandeur. This historic fortress, dating back to the 14th century, has witnessed centuries of French history and intrigue. Visitors can wander through its imposing towers, chapels, and keep, gaining insights into the lives of French royalty. The castle's fascinating architecture and rich history make it a must-visit destination for history enthusiasts and architecture aficionados.

Just a short walk away from this historical gem there is the Bois de Vincennes, a sprawling park steeped in centuries of royal legacy. Once a cherished hunting ground for French monarchs, this enchanting forest has transformed into a haven of tranquillity and natural beauty.
