Nick Jones doesn't do things by halves. The man who turned a Georgian townhouse in Soho into a global members' club phenomenon is plotting his return to London hospitality – and this time, anyone can check in.

The St Clement Hotel is Jones's first major project since stepping down as Soho House CEO in 2022. Rising above his existing deli-wine bar Corner Shop 180 on Arundel Street, the 90-room property ditches the velvet rope entirely. Think boutique luxury meets community-minded hospitality, minus the membership fees.

Opening in 2026, St Clement will pack in a rooftop restaurant, gym, and loft-style apartments for longer stays – targeting everyone from business travellers to weekend breakers who want somewhere with actual personality. Bath amenities come courtesy of British perfumer Lyn Harris, because of course they do.

London's hospitality scene is hardly thriving. Rising business rates, shifting nightlife habits, and a spate of closures have left the West End looking decidedly patchy. But Jones is clearly banking on the city's pull as a global destination – and on his signature formula of thoughtful design, proper food, and spaces people actually want to linger in.

While technically off-grid from Soho proper, St Clement sits firmly in its cultural orbit – a stone's throw from Jones's 180 House flagship. Where Soho House built its reputation on creative exclusivity, St Clement looks set to offer the same soulful design sensibility without the membership gatekeeping.

In a market dominated by faceless hotel chains, that's not nothing. Whether it sparks a wave of independent ventures or stands alone as a bold one-off remains to be seen. Either way, Jones's return is a reminder that London still has room for hospitality with a point of view.

Americans’ desire to visit the Asia-Pacific region has reached a high, and airlines are rushing to provide new routes that capture the rising interest.

Earlier this month, United Airlines unveiled a historic route expansion to the Pacific, calling the recent demand for the region “unprecedented.” The expansion includes dozens of new flights to countries throughout Asia and the Pacific, including destinations never before served by a US airline. In fact, United has grown its transpacific route network so much this winter that it’s 94 percent larger than last winter, the carrier said in <a data-offer-url="https://www.united.com/en/us/newsroom/announcements/cision-125302" class="external-link" data-event-click="{" element":"externallink","outgoingurl":"https:="" www.united.com="" en="" us="" newsroom="" announcements="" cision-125302"}"="" href="https://www.united.com/en/us/newsroom/announcements/cision-125302" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">a release.

“United is in the midst of the largest South Pacific expansion in aviation history,” the release said. The airline has added 15 daily nonstop flights across the Pacific region and will operate a total of 66 flights between the US and Australia and New Zealand—a 40 percent increase compared to last winter. “This will make United's Asia-Pacific network larger than pre-COVID for the first time.”

Indeed, the significant uptick in interest is a lingering consequence of borders shutting down during the pandemic. “The Pacific region was the last to effectively open post-COVID,” says Patrick Quayle, senior vice president of global network planning and alliances for United Airlines. “What we saw all over the world is when countries open borders, demand surged. Asia-Pacific, Australia, New Zealand, and right now China, are really the last that are opening up.”

The region didn’t start fully reopening until well into 2022. (Hong Kong and Japan, for instance, didn’t restart regular travel until September and October 2022.) Compare that to some places in Europe that were reopened as early as 2021, and it’s easy to see why the region is still in the midst of its post-COVID boom.

United is now betting big on the region, adding new destinations and additional flights to existing cities on its route map. “Across the Pacific, United's network this winter is 61 percent larger than all other US airlines combined,” the carrier states. (Although that comparison excludes flights to mainland China.)

One of the blockbusters among the new offerings is a nonstop flight from San Francisco to Christchurch, New Zealand. When it launches on December 8, it will be the first and only nonstop flight between North America and New Zealand’s South Island.

“We see people want to go to the South Island, whether they’re going to Queenstown, Nelson (which is more of the wine region), or to Abel Tasman National Park,” Quayle says. “[These are] people who are looking out for a different experience, a unique experience, getting out of the city and spending more time outdoors. When we look at our passenger data, we see that people who go to New Zealand spend one to two weeks there, and they’re flying between the North Island and the South Island.” The new Christchurch route will be a more convenient way for US travelers to check both islands off their itineraries.

There will also be a new service from San Francisco to Manila, Philippines (which will be the first-ever nonstop for a US carrier), as well as Los Angeles to Auckland, New Zealand, and Brisbane, Australia, added to the lineup, plus new daily flights from Los Angeles to Hong Kong, and the resumption of daily direct flights from Los Angeles to Tokyo-Narita. The carrier also filed requests with the Department of Transportation to launch daily nonstop flights from Houston’s Bush Intercontinental Airport to Tokyo-Haneda.

Most of the new flights will be operated by the airline’s Boeing 787 Dreamliners, which offer plenty of options for travelers. The planes will be fitted with United’s beloved business class, Polaris, which features lie-flat seats all with direct aisle access and Saks Fifth Avenue bedding—an enticing perk on these long-haul flights that can stretch up to 17 or 18 hours. Outside of business, there are three other cabin classes, including Premium Plus, the carrier’s premium economy product with more comfort and recline than coach, the extra-legroom offering Economy Plus, and regular economy.

There should be plenty of eager travelers to fill out those seats: In 2023, flight searches to the Asia Pacific skyrocketed year-over-year, <a data-offer-url="https://www.kayak.com/news/travel-trends-2023/" class="external-link" data-event-click="{" element":"externallink","outgoingurl":"https:="" www.kayak.com="" news="" travel-trends-2023="" "}"="" href="https://www.kayak.com/news/travel-trends-2023/" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">according to Kayak.

It’s a rough day at sea for World of Hyatt members looking to earn or burn points on a luxury cruise with Lindblad Expeditions. Hyatt and Lindblad Expeditions announced that they have mutually agreed to end their relationship, effective Dec. 31.

Lindblad Expeditions, a luxury adventure cruise company sailing to places like Antarctica, linked up with Hyatt in 2019. The partnership allowed World of Hyatt members to redeem their Hyatt points for cruises on Lindblad ships as well as to earn World of Hyatt points and elite night credits on paid cruises, and even enjoy elitelike perks such as onboard credits just for being a World of Hyatt member.

Travelers with existing or new Lindblad Expeditions reservations booked through Hyatt’s dedicated website by Dec. 31 will still be eligible to earn World of Hyatt points and qualifying nights on their cruises. World of Hyatt points redemptions for Lindblad Expeditions trips made before Dec. 31, 2023, for travel that is completed by Dec. 31, 2024, will also be honored.

TPG reached out to both Hyatt and Lindblad Expeditions for further comment, and we’ll update this article with any additional information they provide.

Unfortunately, Lindblad was one of the few cruise operators with a points link to a hotel program, so it’s sad to see this partnership end. Over at Marriott, Bonvoy members can still earn points (and elite-qualifying nights) or book sailings with points with The Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection.

Beyond that, there are still other ways to use points and miles to book a cruise (even though they might not be the best use of points).

Hyatt still has several other interesting partnerships its loyalty members can take advantage of. One of those is Find Experiences, a program where World of Hyatt members can trade in points for experiences around the world, like a Japanese whisky tasting in San Francisco or an open-air jungle safari in Bali.

Another great partner of Hyatt is American Airlines. World of Hyatt members can earn points on eligible flights by linking their AAdvantage accounts. But it doesn’t end there; both companies have offered a quick path to higher tiers of elite status in both programs throughout the partnership. Right now, Hyatt Explorists and Globalists can earn American Airline status by registering for a special promotion by Nov. 30.

Tui’s claim earlier this year to have become the first UK tour operator to give customers the option to have their conversations with the firm interpreted into British Sign Language (BSL) struck a chord with Phil Bloomfield.

Bloomfield, a former head of communications and PR at Gold Medal parent dnata Travel Group and now founder of Bloom Communications, has lived experience of the challenges deaf people face while travelling thanks to his "profoundly deaf" plus son Seb.

His travels with Seb, and Seb’s own travel experiences, inspired Bloomfield to start learning BSL for himself to bridge the gap and deepen their relationship.

He’s been aided in his journey by his tutor Caroline Palmer, founder of BSL at Talking Hands in Hassocks, West Sussex, who too has shared with TTG her experience of travelling as a deaf person.

’WE TALK A LOT ABOUT TRAVEL’S ABILITY TO BREAK DOWN BARRIERS’

My "Plus Son" Seb is a great lad. Kind, generous, mischievous, curious and someone who loves to travel. He also happens to be profoundly deaf as the result of being born prematurely (he was your classic "bag of sugar baby").

As a hearing person, I don't know what that feels like. But through having him in my life, I’ve become much more aware of the barriers that make accessing travel more of an effort for him, and the deaf community as a whole – both as something to enjoy, but also as a profession. That also means I’m also aware of what more can, and should, be done.

As an industry, we’ve talked a lot in the past two decades about how travel has the power to unite humanity and break down barriers. Perhaps that’s helped ameliorate some of the harm we also know it can cause.

Very generally, the dual revolutions of low-cost travel and technology have combined to put travel within reach of more people than it used to be. In purely financial terms, it's no longer the preserve of the privileged few who can afford it. But we'd be naive to think it's as universally accessible as it aspires to be.

There are, for instance, still far too many places where the LGBTQ+ community isn’t welcome. We hear too often about people in wheelchairs struggling to get on or off aircraft or finding there’s no ramp for them at their hotel. And it’s still the exception to the norm to see people of colour featured in travel’s marketing.

'MORE TRAVEL COMPANIES SHOULD FOLLOW TUI'S LEAD'

All of this made it all the more pleasing to see Tui announce it is introducing a British Sign Language (BSL) interpretation service to help its deaf customers communicate with their salespeople and book the holiday they want.

I recently completed my own BSL Level 1 course as the first step on my journey to being able to communicate with Seb on his terms, rather than always expecting him to communicate on mine. And it's already opened my eyes to how it’s within all of ours power to enact small changes that can make a huge difference.

Being able to hear the complex information about our holidays agents tell us via a poor phoneline, making out announcements about of flight over a PA in a noisy airport terminal, hearing what a guide is saying in a museum with poor acoustics – these are things we all take for granted.

Technology can go some way to bridge these gaps – the cochlear implants, for instant, which provide Seb the approximation of sound. But Tui has shown it’s possible to take responsibility, consider what can it can do, and enact change. I hope more travel companies follow their lead.

And if you don’t know where to start, here’s a clue – just ask. If we want to be an inclusive industry, we must start including the people we're currently excluding in the conversation.

Phil Bloomfield is founder of Bloom Communications and PR. He was formerly head of communications and PR at dnata Travel Group.

'I YEARN FOR THE ABILITY TO RELAX WHEN I TRAVEL'

I was born deaf into a hearing family. Growing up, I navigated four years boarding school for deaf children, followed by integration into mainstream hearing schools. My constant companions were hearing aids, without which the world was silent.

However, my life took a transformative turn nine years ago when I received a cochlear implant. This device opened up a realm of previously unheard sounds, including high-pitched tones and essential alerts like fire alarms. I can also tell which of my children is coming down the stairs just by their footsteps.

All of my children are proficient in sign language. They have the privilege of both sound and sign. I am aided by modern technology. It is truly remarkable how technology has changed my experience, and also my family's. But it's crucial to remember that at the end of the day, when I remove my hearing aids and cochlear implant, I return to a world of complete silence.

Fortune has blessed me with the opportunity to travel extensively, often with my family. I worked as an au pair for a family with a deaf daughter, journeying to exciting destinations like Bermuda, Barbados, Washington, Florida, and Monaco, sometimes flying first class – including on the Concorde.

But travels were not without communication challenges. Interactions with airline crews were often fraught, but there has been gradual improvement with more air crew members learning British Sign Language (BSL).

This positive change has been complement increased interest in and awareness of BSL, fuelled – in part – by the success of Rose and Giovanni on Strictly Come Dancing. It raises the question of whether it should be mandatory for all airline personnel to learn BSL, similar to foreign languages.

This need for accessibility extends to airport staff as well. I yearn for the ability to relax when I travel, free from concerns about communication barriers, security checks, and explaining the presence of my cochlear implant.

'PEOPLE'S UNDERSTANDING MUST EVOLVE WITH TECHNOLOGICAL ADVANCES'

Boarding a plane often triggers anxiety, wondering about my seatmate's ability to communicate effectively or my ability to lip-read. In an ideal world, airline staff would be well-versed in deaf awareness and signing.

This same principle applies to travel agencies. With BSL becoming a GCSE subject in schools from 2025, it is high time for companies to follow suit. Deaf individuals, young and old, seek to book holidays, travel with family, or celebrate various occasions. Eliminating communication barriers should be a shared goal.

When it comes to breaking down barriers during travel, the most significant obstacles are communication and the lack of auditory access. Being relegated to specific seats on planes due to safety concerns seems unnecessary. After all, in an emergency, the fundamental need is the same for both deaf and hearing individuals: open the door and get out.

Tui's plans to introduce a BSL interpretation service for those booking holidays is a significant step forward. It shows a commitment to inclusivity and accessibility, allowing deaf customers to book their holidays in a relaxed environment – just like their hearing customers.

While technology continues to advance, the human aspect of understanding and accommodating diverse needs must evolve as well.

Iceland’s popular Blue Lagoon geothermal spa and baths has closed temporarily following heightened levels of volcanic activity on the country’s southwesterly Reykjanes peninsula.

Tens of thousands of tremors have been recorded by the Icelandic Met Office (IMO) in recent weeks, including more than a thousand during a 24-hour period this week, signalling an uptick in volcanic activity.

In an update issued shortly after midday on Thursday (9 November), the IMO said it had detected seven earthquakes of at least magnitude 4, including one of magnitude 4.8 – the largest since the activity began in late October.

It added magma accumulation was ongoing, and that "an acceleration of the process had been observed between days" bringing with it "episodic seismic activity".

The UK’s Met Office, meanwhile, said a magnitude 5 earthquake had since been recorded in the Fagradalsfjall area, just a few kilometres east of Blue Lagoon and around 30km away from Iceland’s capital Reykjavik.

In a statement posted to its website, Blue Lagoon said that while the authorities in Iceland were yet to step up their response to the activity, it had "proactively chosen to temporarily suspend operations for a week" affecting its geothermal spa, Silica Hotel, Retreat Spa, Retreat Hotel, Lava and Moss restaurant.

The closure will continue until 7am on 16 November.

"The primary reason for taking these precautionary measures is our unwavering commitment to safety and wellbeing," said Blue Lagoon. "We aim to mitigate any disruption to our guests’ experiences and alleviate the sustained pressure on our employees.

"During this time, Blue Lagoon Iceland will carefully monitor the seismic developments, in cooperation with the local authorities, and reassess the situation as necessary."

The Foreign Office updated its travel advice for Iceland earlier this week, highlighting an increase in volcanic activity "above normal levels" on the Reykjanes peninsula.

"The Icelandic authorities continue to monitor the area closely, particularly the area northwest of Mt Thorbjorn near the Svartsengi power plant and the Blue Lagoon," said the FCDO.

"Although there is no current eruption, it is possible one could occur. You should monitor local media for updates and follow the authorities advice on travel to the area."

Flights to Iceland’s only international airport, Keflavik, which is situated about 15km north of Blue Lagoon, are continuing as scheduled. Icelandair and Fly Play have not issued any advice of their own.

The boss of a new start-up carrier, which hopes to launch flights between the UK and US in the coming years, has strongly hinted agents will be part of its distribution plans.

James Asquith’s Global Airlines has turned heads after snapping up four Airbus A380 aircraft in recent months, bucking the wider industry trend that has seen others steer away from high-capacity superjumbos.

The A380 was at one time hailed the future of flying, but production ceased in 2021 after predicted order numbers failed to materialise. Asquith, though, believes he has spotted a post-pandemic opportunity to operate transatlantic out of Gatwick using A380s.

Speaking at WTM London during an aviation session on Wednesday (8 November), Asquith was asked by fellow panellist, Riyadh Air chief commercial officer Vincent Coste, about his business model.

Addressing Asquith directly, Coste said: “I would assume your distribution model will essentially be focused on direct online sales? Have you already thought about your mobile app and how you interact with your future guests?"

Asquith replied: “I will show you afterwards.”

However, when pressed by TTG on whether this exchange meant he was leaning towards a direct business model which did not include agents, Asquith said: “Agents categorically will [have a role to play].

Self-made entrepreneur Asquith, who holds the record for being the youngest person to visit every single country, has previously suggested the transatlantic carrier would launch in spring 2024, although he was non-committal on a date or timeline at WTM London.

“Whatever I say I am going to be stuck to a pole and we’ll have to follow through with it,” he said. However, he added: “We know there are challenges for us, but there will be aircraft in the sky sooner than people think.”

Asquith also stressed he recognised Global Airlines would need to “build credibility” before launching. “If I go back two years and say, ‘we’re Global Airlines’, people would say, ‘we can’t find you on the internet, what are you talking about, you’re crazy’,” he remarked.

“Now, we’re getting a lot of support from people at Airbus, the people at the start who said, ‘are you a little bit crazy?’. It has been a big effort to build the credibility – we don’t want to destroy it by saying we want to do this, on this date, and then it gets delayed. It can happen to the biggest and the best in this sector.”

Uber reported its second consecutive profitable quarter Tuesday morning, boosted by a 21% increase in gross bookings year over year and revenue growth of 11% to $9.3 billion in the third quarter.

“Our relentless focus on improving the product experience for both consumers and drivers continued to power profitable growth, with trip growth accelerating to 25%,” CEO Dara Khosrowshahi said. “Uber’s core business is stronger than ever as we enter the busiest period of the year.”

Uber reported net income of $221 million for the quarter that ended in September. That figure includes a $96 million headwind related to revaluations of Uber’s equity investments. Over the same quarter last year, the company lost $1.2 billion.

Surging global travel demand played a part in Uber's strong quarter, Khosrowshahi said during a call with analysts Tuesday morning.

"We had a very, very strong summer, augmented by travel," he said. "As you know, travel has been absolutely booming, leisure travel, and Uber has a very high penetration of calls from travel consumers."

Khosrowshahi, a former CEO of Expedia Group, speaks optimistically about Uber Travel features, including the company's growing presence in the United Kingdom, where — besides hailing a ride — travelers can book rail and coach tickets and even ferry rides on the Thames. In May, Uber added flight booking to its options in the U.K.

He cited figures showing 60% of train and coach users and 25% of flight users in the U.K. have become repeat users of the service. "So they try the product because we have a big audience," he said, "but more importantly they’re coming back to the product, which is great."

Khosrowshahi didn't offer a timeline for when users in other parts of the world could expect expanded Uber Travel features but made clear the importance of travel in Uber's plans.

"For me, travel is something that’s very much in my heart because of my old Expedia days," he said. "We talked about travel being a very, very strong signal for Uber, with travelers typically using Uber because of our global footprint.

"Kind of perspective here: In 2022, nearly 700 million trips globally were taken by consumers out of their primary city, which is pretty amazing. Every quarter, about 20% of our users took a domestic trip outside of their primary city. Our users, they’re high-income earners, they tend to travel a lot, and that becomes a good segment for us to target."

Another travel-related opportunity for Uber is in building ridership to and from airports for Uber Reserve, a service that allows pre-booking up to 90 days in advance. Khosrowshahi said Uber typically accounts for one of the four legs in a roundtrip airport journey. While Reserve is good at picking up riders at their home or hotel for the drive to the airport, he said, "We can do a lot more to improve the experience for the rider arriving at the airport.”

Even with room to grow in that regard, Uber saw its total number of trips increase 25% in Q3 to reach 2.4 billion. Gross bookings for mobility increased 31% year over year, while deliveries were up 18% from last year. Bookings for Uber's freight business were down 27% compared to Q3 2022.

Adjusted EBITDA came in at $1.1 billion, up $576 million compared to the same quarter of 2022. Sales and marketing costs were $941 million for the quarter, down from $1.15 billion year over year.

“Strong top-line trends and record profitability demonstrate the durability of our growth and the significant earnings power underlying our platform,” chief financial officer Nelson Chai said. “We continue to make disciplined investments in growth opportunities to support long-term value creation for all stakeholders.”

This year’s second quarter marked Uber’s first-ever quarterly net profit, with earnings of $9.2 billion driving a net profit of $394 million.

“For most of our history, ‘profitable’ wasn’t the first thing that came up when you asked someone about Uber,” Khosrowshahi said at the time. “In fact, many observers proclaimed over the years that we would never make any money. … But we knew they were wrong about Uber, as did many of our investors who backed us over the years.”

The partnership follows a recently signed memorandum of understanding that sets up a discussion on what ticket resale can mean for Rail Europe’s customer base, according to a release from Rail Europe.

Gilles de Richemond, CEO and co-founder of Fairlyne, said the company is excited to collaborate with Rail Europe. “Our joint aim is to ensure greater convenience and accessibility for travelers,” he said.

The idea behind the pairing is that Fairlyne’s platform - which is designed to distribute vouchers to ticket resellers - should align with the European train ticket seller’s vision to build a convenient and sustainable rail travel ecosystem. Through the partnership, Fairlyne will enable travelers to resell or purchase tickets during peak travel periods.

“Every year, hundreds of millions of euros worth of train tickets remain unused,” Bender said. “This partnership with Fairlyne marks a pivotal stride in our mission to establish a more sustainable travel landscape.”

New research from WTM reveals that most major travel markets in the Americas have recovered from the pandemic, apart from the US which is due to get back to 2019 levels next year.

The WTM Global Travel Report, in association with Tourism Economics, is published to mark the opening of this year’s WTM London, the world’s most influential travel and tourism event.

For the current year, the Americas as a whole falls short of 2019 in both volumes and value. The region is expected to welcome 117m inbound leisure visitors, 4% down on 2019’s number. In dollar terms the shortfall is negligible, only 2% shy of pre-pandemic earnings.

When looking at the region country-by-country, it emerges that the other major markets have had a very strong year. The US is by far the biggest market in the Americas, and saw a 17% drop in the value of its inbound leisure market. In contrast, number two Mexico was 128% ahead of 2019 with Canada up by 107%.

However, the US domestic market has performed strongly and is in positive territory, with 2023’s domestic spend tipped to come in at 130% of 2019. All of the major domestic markets are ahead. Mexico is 144% ahead and Brazil, the third largest domestic market, is 118%.

Venezuela is the eighth biggest domestic market in the region. It is predicted to reach levels 325% higher than 2019, the second highest percentage increase of any market registered in the report.

Overall, domestic tourism in the Americas for 2023 will be 31% ahead of 2019 by value.

The immediate future is looking positive, with the report confirming that the US will catch up with pre-pandemic levels in the next year. The findings show that 2024 will end with the US inbound in positive territory, 8% ahead of 2019. Domestically, the US will continue to grow, with the value of domestic tourism tipped to come in at around $1000 billion dollars.

Further out, the report looks forward to 2033 and says that the US inbound leisure market will remain the second largest in the world and be worth 82% more than 2024. This is among the strongest growth of the ten largest inbound markets, with only China (158%), Thailand (178%) and India (133%) registering a bigger increase. The US will also outperform its regional rivals, with Mexico looking at an 80% increase in inbound spend over the next decade; Canada is in line for a 71% jump.

Over the same period, outbound leisure travel from US is expected to grow in value by more than one-third (35%) in value, although this is the lowest of the ten countries analysed for this part of the report.

Juliette Losardo, Exhibition Director, World Travel Market London, said: “The strong showing for this year’s domestic market across the region aligns with what we’re seeing elsewhere – the substitution effect which came into play when international travel was restricted is still relevant, with many more people choosing to explore what is on offer within their own borders.

“US inbound is taking longer to get back to pre-pandemic volumes, but 2024 will see the turnaround completed. WTM London has a positive and long-standing relationship with the US market and the team are proud to be a contributing factor to its recovery.

New research released today by WTM reveals that while Chinese tourism has yet to recover from the pandemic, growth will return and by 2033 Chinese outbound by value could be “double the size” of the United States.

The WTM Global Travel Report, in association with Tourism Economics, anticipates that the growth in the value of outbound travel from China between 2024 and 2033 will be 131%, by far the largest increase for any major market.

“There is potential for China to become double the size of the United States as a source market in terms of spending,” the report claims.

The number of Chinese households earning enough to be able to afford to travel will “roughly double” by 2033, with an additional 60m-plus households in the market.

Elsewhere, Indonesia and India will also see significantly more households able to afford to travel over the next decade.

For 2023, APAC tourism is still lagging behind 2019 levels. Overall, the region will welcome 149m leisure arrivals this year, 30% fewer than 2019 levels volumes. In terms of value, the region as a whole will end the year at only 68% of 2019’s return.

By country, China’s inbound leisure is only 60% recovered by value, with other big markets also behind – Thailand and Japan are at 57% of 2019. India is the region’s strongest performer and is only 6% shy of matching 2019.

Domestic tourism is proving more resilient. China and Japan, again, are the only countries in the region’s top ten underperforming 2019 levels, but the gap is closer, with China at 93% and Japan at 82%. Australia tops the regional charts for domestic with 2023’s value coming in a 124% of 2019.

APAC’s tourism market will continue to improve into 2024, although the picture is mixed. China will end the year slightly ahead in value, as will India and Australia. Thailand and Japan will still not have got back to 2019 levels.

In contrast, domestic travel in 2024 will be stronger than 2019 for almost all countries in the region. Many travelers “substituted” domestic trips for international ones during the pandemic and this trend is now established, despite the lifting of restrictions. Japan is the only exception, “reflective of the historical downward trend in domestic leisure and domestic travel demand more generally within Japan”.

Juliette Losardo, Exhibition Director, World Travel Market London, said: “The WTM Global Travel Report proves essential reading for anyone in the industry wanting a first glimpse of future opportunity. The global perspective on how regions and countries are faring after the pandemic, and the prospects for next year and the longer-term are not to be missed.

“APAC is a critical driver of the world’s inbound, outbound and domestic tourism sectors, and the growth profile for China and other countries in the region is extremely positive news for us all.

1. Sustainable Travel

Sustainability has emerged as a crucial consideration for travellers in recent years, and by 2024, the trend will reach its pinnacle. Travel companies are increasingly prioritising eco-friendly initiatives, offering carbon-neutral travel options, supporting local communities, and promoting responsible tourism. Consumers are actively seeking sustainable travel experiences, leading to the rise of eco-tourism, green hotels, and the adoption of renewable energy sources in the sector.

2. Hyper-Personalisation

The integration of artificial intelligence and big data analytics will revolutionise personalisation in the travel industry. By 2024, sophisticated algorithms will allow travel companies to tailor their offerings based on individual preferences, creating truly unique and memorable experiences. From personalised itineraries to dynamic pricing based on consumer behavior, hyper-personalisation will empower travellers to curate their travel adventures like never before.

3. Contactless and Seamless Travel

The COVID pandemic accelerated the adoption of contactless and digital solutions in the travel industry. In 2024, these innovations will become standard practices, ensuring a seamless travel experience. Biometric technologies, such as facial recognition and touchless fingerprinting, will expedite security procedures, while mobile apps and digital passports will streamline check-ins, enable contact-free payments, and provide real-time information to travelers.

4. Rise of Gen Z Travellers

As Generation Z enters adulthood, the travel industry will witness a significant shift in consumer behavior. This tech-savvy generation, born and raised in the digital age, will demand immersive and authentic experiences infused with technology. Gen Z travellers will prioritise off-the-beaten-track destinations, adventure tourism, and travel experiences that allow them to make a positive impact on the communities they visit.

5. Virtual and Augmented Reality Experiences

Virtual and augmented reality will reshape the way travellers plan and experience their journeys. By 2024, virtual tours and immersive experiences will become mainstream, allowing some travellers to explore destinations from the comfort of their homes. Augmented reality will enhance on-site experiences, providing real-time information, historical context, and interactive elements at museums, landmarks, and tourist attractions worldwide.

6. Health and Wellness Tourism

The pursuit of well-being and mindfulness will continue to drive the growth of health and wellness tourism. Travellers are increasingly seeking destinations that offer holistic experiences focusing on physical, mental, and emotional well-being. In 2024, the travel industry will respond by expanding wellness offerings, including spa retreats, mindfulness workshops, fitness vacations, and healthy culinary experiences.

7. Remote Work and Travel

The COVID pandemic has proven that work can be conducted remotely, leading to a surge in digital nomadism. In 2024, the convergence of work and travel will become even more prevalent. Companies will embrace flexible work arrangements, and travel providers will cater to the needs of remote workers by offering co-working spaces, reliable internet connectivity, and accommodation options conducive to productivity.

8. AI-powered Chatbots and Virtual Assistants

Chatbots and virtual assistants are set to evolve into intelligent, AI-powered travel companions, providing personalised recommendations, real-time assistance, and 24/7 customer support. These virtual assistants will address concerns, answer queries, and offer customised suggestions on accommodations, transportation, dining, and local attractions, enriching the overall travel experience.

9. Space Tourism

With ambitious projects like SpaceX, Virgin Galactic, and Blue Origin gaining momentum, space tourism is expected to take a giant leap by 2024. High-net-worth individuals will have the opportunity to venture beyond Earth's atmosphere, experiencing weightlessness and witnessing the breathtaking views of the cosmos. Space tourism will gradually pave the way for more accessible commercial space travel, redefining the boundaries of adventure tourism.

10. Multi-Destination and Experiential Travel

In 2024, travellers will seek more meaningful and transformative experiences by exploring multiple destinations during a single trip. Multi-country itineraries, immersive cultural exchanges, and diverse activities will become the norm. Visitors will engage in hands-on learning experiences, contributing to local economies, and gaining a deeper understanding of the places they visit.

These top ten trends offer just a glimpse into the future of travel in 2024. From sustainability and hyper-personalisation to space tourism and AI-powered virtual assistance, they will reshape the way we explore the world, inspiring more conscious and immersive travel experiences. As industry reports continue to evolve and more information becomes available, it is crucial for travel companies to adapt and embrace these trends to cater to the evolving needs and expectations of modern-day travellers.
